Barabar Caves
Located in Jehanabad district near Gaya, Barabar caves is the oldest surviving rock cut caves of Asia. It was built by emperor Ashoka for the Ajivaks , a sect founded by Makkhali Gosala. Ajivaks were contemporary to Buddhism and Jainism, however their relation to both these religions is not yet known. It is said that the caves were built by Emperor Ashoka during the reign of Mauryan dynasty in the 322 BC -185 BC. They have a mirror-like polish from inside such that one’s reflection can be seen on the walls of the caves. They are located on the twin hills of Barabar and Nagarjuni caves, 25 km north of Gaya.
How do you reach
