Bihar originates from the word ‘Viharas’ which means abode as the land was home to many Buddhist monks. Hence the name “the land of Buddha”. The capital of Bihar – Patna, earlier known as Pataliputra was the capital of ancient Magadh Kingdom that ruled over major chunk of India. Nalanda University, located in the Nalanda district of Bihar was one of the earliest centers of education attracting students from all over the world. This prestigious university is now a UNESCO World heritage site and a popular tourist place. Other tourist places in Bihar include Nalanda, Rajgir, Pawapuri, Darbhanga and Madhubani.
